Why is staff training important?
Given the latest increases to National Minimum wage and National Insurance it can be tempting to reduce training budgets or cut spending on staff training.
However, with the potential consequences for employers given the changes that Employment Rights Bill will introduce, particularly Day 1 unfair dismissal rights, it’s now more important than ever to ensure that your employees are properly trained.
What are the benefits of a well-trained staff team?
Increased productivity and efficiency, trained employees are able to complete their tasks to a higher standard and more efficiently. This leads to higher productivity and a lower error rate. This also helps with staff retention.
Day one unfair dismissal rights
It is imperative that you as an employer train any new hires in how to complete their new roles, and ascertain if they are suitable candidates for the role. Failing to train your staff may result in poor productivity, it makes sense to train your team to a high standard so they do not struggle with induction crisis. There will likely be less time to train your new hires and induct them to the way you do things within your business with the impending day one unfair dismissal rights.
What is induction crisis?
As an employer, under the new proposed day one right, you will have less time to ascertain the suitability of your new hires. Best to use this time wisely to ensure there is a transfer of learning and that you can test the suitability of your new hire for the longer term.
Induction crisis refers to a situation where a new employee struggles to adjust to their new role and environment, leading to potential dissatisfaction and even resignation, often within the first few months of employment.
As there are often fewer candidates on the market with the correct skill set, and the cost of hiring is so high, it is best to formulate an induction process that helps to settle the employee and ensure they are productive as soon as possible. If you have provided training and they have not reached the desired level of output, terminating for failed probation also becomes easier to justify. Remember, as an employer you will have less time to assess a new hires capability, use this time wisely.
Improved employee morale and satisfaction
Employees who see and feel that their employer is invested in them and their progress, are more content and report better job satisfaction.
Reduced staff turnover
When employees can see that their employer is invested in their learning and development, they are more likely to feel that they have a long-term future. This helps ensure knowledge transfer in multi-generational teams and reduces the risk of employees ‘quietly quitting’.
Targeted training helps to identity and mitigate the risks from employees saying or doing the wrong thing. It can mean that employers are less likely to find themselves in Tribunal defending against claims for sexual harassment and discrimination. Some training is regulatory, and is best practice.
Staff training is a key factor in ensuring employee engagement so that you get the best out of your people.

Whilst assisting one of our clients with its strategic review, we identified performance management as a key factor in ensuring that the business returned to profit. We provided comprehensive in person training which covered upskilling the team’s leadership abilities, the importance of emotional intelligence when managing difficult situations and how to effectively handle under-performing employees, and how to hold and document potentially difficult conversations.
We recognise that it might not be practical to take several of your employees out of the business for a day at a time, so we are able to design bespoke, bite-sized e-learning modules for your business for use in induction programmes and training for the wider team.
